Our journey of Impact and Growth

Sage & Fifth Therapy Place is a mindfulness based Holistic Psychotherapy practice that started in Washington, DC during the times of the COVID-19 Pandemic from seeing a need for holistic healing in our lives, as individuals, as couples and as a community.

During this unprecedented time, our founder, Huma Sikandar Fatakia, LPC, brought together a team of specialized therapists who share a passion for holistic wellness. Together, we established a practice group dedicated to providing specialized evidence-based psychotherapy that embraces the principle of holistic care for the whole person.

Providing evidence-based holistic psychotherapy that truly helps clients feel unstuck and creates a lasting impact on their lives has been our mission from the start.

And from then onwards we have grown, staying grounded in this mission to make a bigger impact in the community. Since our launch, our team has grown in it’s diversity and geography. In 2022, we expanded our team to offer therapy to Maryland clients in addition to our clients in Washington, DC and we now also offer services in Virginia.

How we create a bigger impact in our client’s lives

Our growing team of specialized holistic psychotherapists are each a specialist in their own niche from Trauma Therapy to Couples Therapy to Gender Affirming Care to Pre-conception/ Perinatal Therapy and utilize evidence-based specialized therapeutic approaches such as EMDR, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Culturally Responsive Therapy, Mindfulness based Therapies that have been backed by research.

Staying true to our mission, no one on our team provides just talk therapy because we know from research that integrating evidence-based approaches in therapy help clients address their issues in more impactful ways and most times provide a quicker path to change. We use every tool in their tool box to empower you to overcome what’s getting in the way of your life fulfillment and relationship satisfaction.

What to expect in the therapy process and your therapy sessions?

Your hour (sometimes more) with your therapist will be a unique mix of therapeutic interventions focused on your goals. You’ll meet with your therapist for a free consultation to discuss your goals and they will come with a plan to help you achieve your goals. From EMDR to somatic interventions to meditation mixed in with talk therapy to couples therapy to trauma informed therapy as needed, your plan will have an evidence-based therapy approach that attends to you as a holistic person, focuses on your goals and your holistic wellness. As you embark on this journey of growth, healing and impactful change with your therapist, you both will collaborate to dig deep, with courage and patience, creating safe space for you to explore what’s getting in the way and honoring your autonomy every step of the way.

We recommend that new clients start with weekly or biweekly (once in two weeks) sessions to establish a good foundation for thier therapuetic work with their therapist. Research shows that your therapeutic alliance with your therapists determines 30% of therapy’s success, whereby your commitment to the therapy process is essential for achieving tangible results.

What does Sage & Fifth stand for?

No it’s not the name of a street intersection! :)

The name, Sage & Fifth, is inspired by indigenous peoples practice of burning Sage as part of a spiritual ritual to cleanse and promote healing and the Fifth Chakra, also known as Vishuddha, responsible for communication, self-expression, and the ability to speak your personal truth.

Our name is a grounding force in our practice and reminds us to hold space for the the holistic healing that is possible when we have an awareness of our body, mind and soul to overcome what’s not serving us and connect deeper with ourselves and others.

What our Clients Say

When I met Huma I was an adult revisiting some childhood traumas. I had been in counseling at various times in my life and found Huma to be very different from other practitioners. Huma did more than listen, she provided strategies to assist me in and out of sessions. I am stronger as a result of the work I did with Huma.

— K. M.

Of all the counselors/therapists I have worked with, Elise ended up being my absolute favorite and someone who I believe I made the most growth and progress with. I can't thank her enough for the impact she made in my life.

— C. G..

Huma has an uncanny ability to tune in to wherever I am and make connections I don't think I would've ever made on my own. It's a relief having Huma as my therapist. My time with her is something I look forward to every single week, and I don't think many people say that about therapy.

— Elyse.

I wanted to share with you how much our session helped me today, and really how helpful I always find our sessions. I am so impressed by your ability to tune into wherever I am.

— Caitlin.

Trauma can disconnect us from ourselves and others. We want to help you overcome what’s holding you back.
